As a Creative Freelancer, you naturally want to be seen as an expert in your field.

When I started my freelancing career, being perceived as an expert in social media marketing helped me tremendously. This reputation was built on the specialization I had developed while working at an agency, where I focused exclusively on social media. It wasn’t long before I became known as a social media expert.

This reputation brought me numerous new clients through referrals during my first few years. However, I didn’t rest on my laurels—I continuously worked to strengthen my positioning.

Here’s what helped me:

1. Publish Content

From the beginning, I focused on publishing content about social media marketing.

For example, I wrote articles explaining how to execute more efficient social media strategies. Additionally, I created a brochure that provided an introduction to the topic. I brought this handbook to meetings with potential clients, distributed it at coworking spaces, and handed it out at relevant events.

The handbook offered real value, making it far more effective than simply handing out a business card.

2. Write Guest Articles

Guest articles allow you to reach a much wider audience with your content.

Many online platforms accept guest submissions, or you can apply to become a guest author. Publishing articles in other media helps you connect with a larger audience, provides valuable backlinks to your website (which improves your domain authority), and enhances your reputation.

Being featured in niche-specific publications also significantly strengthens your positioning as an expert in your field.

3. Host Your Own (Online) Event

Another great way to position yourself as an expert is by hosting your own event.

During the early stages of my freelancing career, I organized a talk titled "The State of Online Marketing." I promoted the event on Facebook, which was admittedly much easier at the time. Even though my goal wasn’t to make money from the event, I charged an entry fee. This added perceived value to the event and made it feel more professional.

The talk was a huge success, attracting over 100 attendees and resulting in collaborations with two new clients.
